   History Of Canty Canty townland is named after St. Cataldus. This Saint was born in the 7th Century in Canty. He built a church and a holy well and legend has it that there were cures in this well until till local women washed their clothes in it. The holy well is located on my Daddy's farm. Priests from southern Italy came to see my holy well. Saint Cataldus immigrated to Itay and became their patron saint. HISTORY OF CANTY An old man called Paddy O'Brien told my dad some more information about about St. Cathadus. The Kiely family lived on my dad's farm about one hundred years ago. There was a crab apple tree growing over the well. People used to come and hang rosary beads on it. Children used to also come and throw stones at the crab apple tree to knock down the apples, but the stones ended up in the field. Mr Kiely was cutting hay in this field and broke his scythe. He got angry about the stones in his hay. He got a saw and cut the tree and threw the tree into the corner of the field. He died a few months later even though he was a strong healthy man. The well went dry a few days after he cut the tree and it goes dry every summer since. There was also a cure for sore eyes. Some woman washed her clothes in the well and after that the cure dissapeared. Some people say St. Cathaldus was born in a field on our land. by David |
