Kilgreany Caves

There is a famous cave on my father’s farm called Kilgreany Cave. Archaeologists excavated it in 1928 and 1934. 865 artefacts, animal bones and human skeletons were found. Some of the animal bones were from animals that are now extinct like the Great Irish Deer. There is evidence that people were using the cave for about 6,500 years.

Ballyrafter Primary Interschool

On Sunday the 25th of January we made up a team for the Primary Interschool over in Ballyrafter Centre Lismore. It started at 10:30a.m in the morning. We were the second team to go in. In the first round we got all clear. We had to wait a very long time until our second round. Paul Kiely on Puddle Puss went clear. Then Alix Barry on Rasta Rocket went clear. Lawrence Fennell on Mr. Socks refused twice. But Alix and Paul got into the indivual jump-off. Paul Kiely refused a fence and Alix Barry knocked a fence. But still we were pleased with how we went. It ended at 4:30 p.m.

The Miserable Night

It was a dark rainy night. I was supposed to stay inside. When my mam was getting out the laundry she left the door open. I was near the open door. My brother pushed me out. I got wet. My mum was mad. When she told me to go inside it was so dark I could not see the door. I bumped into the side of the door. I was hurt. My mum pushed me through the door softly. She told me to go upstairs, to heal my head. I got better in two more days. It was a nice day. I was happy again.

Here's a story from First Class...

Aliens in Ballinameela

I looked up in the sky. I saw a green and red thing. It looked like it was heading towards the school. We all ran out to see. Then a big door opened. We ran into mam and dad and I said, "Mam, Dad, a spaceship is outside."

Swimming in Clonea

We went swimming in Clonea.

First and Second Class started swimming last Friday in Clonea  Hotel for seven weeks. Hallahan's bus brought us to Clonea at half past twelve and brought us back at half past two. The water in the pool was cold. We had a hot shower when the lesson was over. We had two people teaching us to swim. They put us in two groups. Mr. de Burca and some of the parents came with us to help.

My life as a monk

One day Brother Cormac and myself were in the bee garden collecting the honey. Suddenly we heard a bell. We started to walk out towards the kitchen. I noticed that the bell kept on ringing which only meant one thing…

“Attack” shouted Brother Killian! We ran as fast as our legs would carry us.

“To the tower”, I shouted. The Norsemen outside were raging at the door, trying to get in. We ran across the yard. Brother Killian tripped on the steps and twisted his ankle. Me and Brother James helped him to his feet. We were half way up the steps to the tower when the Norsemen broke in.

I said we could take the underground passage to the tower. We ran to the underground passage, jumped in, and ran as fast as we could. It was hard because of all the rats around us. We came to a fork. We all wanted to go right, but we came to a dead end. We looked up and saw a door leading to some part of the monastery. Brother James went up first to see if it was safe, but unfortunately the Norsemen just came through the door as he was getting out. They got him and killed him. We ran like hell back to the fork and took the left ground passage. We came to another door. I poked my head up first, and I saw the steps up to the tower. We ran up the steps and looked out the window. It was torture. All the blazing fires, the spears flying up to the tower, all the screaming and shouting.

I went down to try and help to bring all the injured up to the tower. Eventually, the monastery was ruined except for the tower, which still stood tall. We went down to try and collect the dead. I found Brother James, well half of him anyway.

I live in Woodstock it’s a nice place. I think its called Woodstock because there is a wood near by. The house I live was a shop a long time ago. When my parents moved into our house the shop counter and shelves were still there. There was also signs for tobacco and tea and a an old weighing scales which was used for weighing tea, flour and sweets.

Canty Well

Canty townland is named after St. Cathaldus. He was born in the 7th century. He Studied in Lismore. He became bishop and served for a time in the parish of Clogheen. Like many early  Irish saints he travelled from Ireland. Is it believed that he was headed for the Holy Land, but perhaps due to shipwreck, he landed in the south of Italy, where he stayed and eventually died. He is the patron Saint of the disocese and city of Taranto, Italy. His feast day is the 10th of  May. The well at his birth place in Canty was believed to have curses in it. It is now considered a holy well and mass is celebrated there on his feast day.

Birthday survey

1st and 2nd Class did a survey. They asked everyone in the school what month they were born. They did not ask the infants. These are the months that the pupils were born in.

If you are not from Ireland, "Eanair" is the Irish word for January, "Feabhra" means February, and "Márta" means March. We will do more months later on.
