December 2005                    Nollaig 2005

Thank you for visiting our website. Our names are Fiona and Meabh. We are in 6th class, and we are the current editors.

Our friends in Finland sent us this lovely Christmas card. They are in Helsinki. The writing on it is in Finnish. It is hard to see it. It says..."Hyvaa Joulua". This means "Happy Christmas". In Irish it is "Nollaig Shona".

Christmas as a Child

I loved Christmas as a child. It was always full of magic and fun. I always loved decorating the house and putting up the Christmas tree and writing our letters to Santa. It was so exciting. I never wanted to grow up.

I remember when I was about 10 years old and had been allowed to go to midnight mass in the Church across the road from our house. Everyone joined in singing all the beautiful Christmas Carols and afterwards we would visit the beautiful crib and say a little prayer. Then it was home to bed because Santa was on his way.

We always woke early on Christmas morning because I and my brothers were so excited! Yes! Santa had arrived and oh! what fun we had playing with all our lovely presents. But all too soon we grew up, and I now look forward again to Christmas with my own children and passing on to them the traditions of my childhood.

By Emily, 2nd class, (written by Emily’s mam).

When I was young

When I was young Christmas was very different. We didn’t have Christmas trees; we just had beautiful berry Holly. In school we used put on a play and go out singing Christmas Carols. We used walk to Dungarvan to Midnight Mass.

By Stephen, 5th Class (written by his grandmother)

What did the big cracker say to the little cracker?

My pop is bigger than your pop.

Who carries a sack and bites people?

Santa Jaws.

Why did Rudolf go down the chimney?

Because he wanted to get Santa's beer.

Why shouldn't Santa drink and drive?

Because he might crash.

Why did Santa tell Rudolf to go to bed?

Because it was not Christmas yet.

What happened when Santa went down the chimny?

He got stuck.

What  does santa have for tea?

Santa Bageti.

Our Christmas Pageant

We are doing a Christmas pageant on the 15th of December. Its about preparing for Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ. Some people are acting as stars and others are acting as darkness. The little ones are shepherds and angels. The first class are Innkeepers. We are doing it for the WLRFM Lions Club Hamper Appeal.

CHRISTMAS

In the North Pole the elves are working very hard. We have our tree up there are lots of decorations. The elves are helping Santa to make all the toys for all the boys and girls. We are staying at home for our dinner this year. My cousins will call up for Christmas night. I am looking forward to Christmas. I am looking forward to telling all my friends what I got. This is my sister's second Christmas and she is really looking forward to it.

My Grandparents

My Nanna was born in the area of Kilnafarna. There were three children in the family, two girls and one boy. They went to Glenbeg N.S. Nanna never went to secondary school; she stayed at home and helped her mother. They walked and cycled everywhere, and walked to Mount Stuart church every weekend. When Nanna got older she moved to America with her uncle in 1946 and stayed there for six years. She worked in Shirrach’s Chocolate Factory in Boston . Later she travelled to Canada and New York and came home in 1952.

They went to football matches in Bushy Park every Sunday, and there she met Grandad. They got married in Ballinameela Church on the 22nd of January 1957. They lived in Carriglea for two years where Grandad worked and two of my aunts were born. Then they moved to Knockaun where Nanna still lives, and five more children were born, including my dad, and lived happy lives until granddad became ill and passed away in 1995. And a poem was dedicated to him by Eamonn Breathnach; this is one of my favourite verses from the poem:

Francie

“No ball too high to catch,

Or kick too hard to stop,

In younger days with dog and gun,

Few could match his shot.”

By Heather

My dogs

I have 1 puppy called Buddy. He is one year old. I love him and I own him. When I leave him out in the morning he goes mad. Once when I left him out he scratched me on the leg.

Hannah

We have a dog. Her name is Hannah. My brother owns Hannah. Sean is his name. He taught here how to sit down and lie down. She likes to lick people on the face. She is very funny. We had another dog. His name was Charlie. He ran away. Hannah is very nice. She doesn’t bite. She is black and brown. She is very big. I love her.

Narnia

A lot of bad things go on in Narnia. The White Witch turned Mr. Tumnus into a stone and she turned squirrels into stone too. It is always winter, never spring. The White Witch gave Edmund stale bread and a tiny bit of water. And afterwards she gave him five Turkish delight. Edmund then met Lucy. Lucy asked what was wrong. He said I’m fine. But there was something wrong. He felt sick.

by Ellen, 2nd class

Narnia

Now Lucy, Edmund, Peter and Susan went into the wardrobe, and now they all believe in Narnia. But the White witch is on the loose. Oh no! But it’s good that Aslan is going out to kill the White Witch and save Edmund. All the others shouted “hurray”. Well, I forgot to tell you that they have to go to the Stone Table first… and guess what they’re travelling with? Ok, I’ll tell you. The answer is they’re travelling with beavers. But now I have to get on with it. When they arrived at the Stone Table they met Aslan. Now we have to wait to see what comes next…
