First class were listening to the story of The Gruffalo. This book was written by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Then they wrote their own Gruffalo story. Here they are...

I MET A GRUFFALO

The Gruffalo was after me and he chased me in the woods.  The Gruffalo was very big and hairy with sharp tusks and a wart on his nose.  He was scared.

By Cian

I MET A GRUFFALO

I met a gruffalo.  Its name is Mr. Gruffalo but I am not so sure.  I met him by a lake, but when I went to school he ate my teacher.  So I ran to tell the other teacher but it was too late, the Gruffalo ate all the other teachers.  It was excellent because we now have no homework.

I MET A GRUFFALO

There was a Gruffalo.  The Gruffalo ate the whole school.  He was big and brown.  He was spooky.  He had a big nose and very big tusks.  He lived in a cave in the wood.  His bed was made from big leaves and straw.

You can listen to this story here.

Here is a flag of Ireland. Here is a flag of Waterford too. We made these flags using squares and rectangles. Even the flagpoles are made out of rectangles. We joined all the rectangles together. We even put a small circle on top of the flagpole.

How many rectangles can you see altogether? We used our interactive whiteboards to make these. A rectangle has 4 sides and so has a square.

The colours are green, white and gold. The Waterford colours are blue and white. Waterford is in Munster.

We did a survey in 1st and 2nd class to find out what month everyone in the class was born. Here is the chart we made. The teacher showed us how to make the chart. The best month for birthdays is May. There are 12 months in the year. nobody has a birthday in April and December.

We are doing a science experiment.

  Hand Eye Foot
Left 4 6 3
Right 23 21 24
Total 27 27 27

There are 27 people in our classroom.

Most of the people in the class are right-handed.

4 people are left-handed.

Most of the people in the class have a right dominant eye.

6 people have a left dominant eye.

Most of the people in the class have a right dominant foot.

3 people have a left dominant foot.

Only 2 people have left everything dominant.

This section was written by the teacher...

Here is how to find out which is your dominant eye. Stand about 10 metres from a window. Get a pencil, and hold it at arm's length in line with a vertical edge... the side of a window. Keep two eyes open.

Now, close the left eye. Now open both eyes again. Now, close your right eye. Which open eye makes the pencil seem to move in relation to the distant window edge?  That is your non-dominant eye. The eye which makes the pencil NOT to seem to move is your DOMINANT eye?

River Dougles

My name is Robert. I live in Ballinacourty and a river passes through our land and it is called the River Dougles. River Dougles is known as the millstream. It flows out of the middle of Cappagh Lake. Originally the lake was fed from a stream that rises in Glenupper (Modeligo). It worked a mill in Mr. Chavasse’s yard. And the overflow went into the first cappagh lake. This lake is joined to the second lake by a channel. The Dougles flows out of the second lake (middle lake). It crosses under the Cappaquin main road at Killishal and flows down till it goes under ground at Ballinacourty, Cappagh and rises again at Knockawn and flows into the Brickey.

This stream also worked a mill for grinding wheat into flour, and oats into oatmeal during 1800s. The ruin of the mill and kiln can be seen to this day at Killishal.

This story is also in the Geography section of our website.

WE GOT MAIL TODAY

Today we got some pictures and stories from the Cars Group who are from England.  There are nine pupils in the Cars Group.  They told us about themselves.  They told us about what hobbies they like, what age they are, what their names are, how many in their families and what pets they have at home.  Their teacher’s name is Miss West.  They made a map about England to show us where their school is.  We were very excited when we got the mail today.  Teacher also got a card.  We are looking forward to writing back to the Cars Group soon.

THE BOOKFAIR

The book fair was on for five days in our school.  It was really good.  There were about five hundred books.  I bought three books, two for me and one for my cousin because he stayed at my house for two days.  The books are called Cars, Exposure and Experiments and the one I bought my cousin is called Charlie Cooks Favourite Book.  I think he will like it.  The Exposure and Experiments is the best. It is a set with a book which has experiments on either side.  The Cars book is a silver book, it tells you how fast cars go and some of the cars are really old.  The oldest car is an eighty model.  It was made in 1895.  My friend bought a book called One Hundred Gross Facts about the Human Body.

My name is Gretta. I have a pony. His name is Jack. Sometimes I would ride him. Once, when I was riding him in my Daddy’s field I fell off of him. I cried and he just stayed there when I fell off. Now, my daddy sometimes leads me when I get on him. My daddy is going to make me jump a pole. In the summer we leave him out in the field and in the winter we put him in a shed. My daddy bought a rug for him. Now in the winter he only has his rug to keep him clean.
