Science Week and Christmas events We’ve had a busy time recently at our school, with a host of science and Christmas events for pupils and parents. Kicking-off November’s activities was a visit by a mobile planetarium. It was perfect timing, as the cold, clear nights are now with us, pupils could understand more about the universe. A special ‘skydome’ seating 35 was set-up in the hall, enabling pupils to name stars and planets, and hear about galaxies and seasons of the year. Another event last month which saw the children getting hands-on was a science exhibition. All part of Science Week, which aims to encourage children to get involved in science, it started with pupils understanding and learning experiments in class. Whilst being plenty of fun, they also developed 11 key skills under ‘working scientifically’ and ‘designing and making’. The event culminated in a special exhibition at our school for pupils to showcase their experiments to parents. The hall was a buzz of excitement with over 20 experiments on display, including windmill making, optical illusions, magnet fun and a ‘rubber’ egg pickled in vinegar. And finally, we started the festive season in style, with a trip to see the show ‘Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer’ in December, at the Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford. Our principal, Michael Culloo, said: “The children get a tremendous amount of satisfaction from these events – they form a key part of the curriculum. And we have more planned for the New Year.” Science Exhibition
